Challenges with attention can affect your child’s ability to be successful in all subjects, but the following strategies can specifically help with math:

  • Circle the math operation signs (e.g., plus, minus, etc.) before working on the problem to help make sure you are carrying out the correct steps
  • Number each step in the problem and check them off as you complete them
  • After reading through the problem, write down any formulas you will need prior to solving it
  • Work the problem out loud. This step helps keep the information in your working memory for longer and helps enhance attention
  • Split longer assignments into multiple parts and take a five to ten-minute movement break between parts
  • Tap your eraser on each number in the equation to check your work for errors
