Sight words are words that cannot be sounded out, as they do not follow general letter-sound rules. These words must be memorized so they can be read at sight. The following is a list of the 150 most commonly used words in the English language, listed in order of frequency. Although some of these words do follow general letter-sound rules, they should all be memorized due to how often they are encountered.

Introduce each word to your child by saying it on its own and then in a sentence. Ask your child to repeat the word. Then have them write the word on its own and in a sentence on a notecard. Decorate a large shoebox with your child and place the completed notecards inside. Every week draw out several notecards to review over the course of the week.
